Dr. Cutler’s journey to veterinary medicine and animal welfare:

Dr. Cutler was trained in traditional small animal Western medicine and surgery at the oldest accredited veterinary school still in operation in the country, the University of Pennsylvania.  Her degree is spelled out in the Latin form, Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD), and is awarded only to UPenn graduates and is equivalent to the modern wording Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) that all other US veterinary schools use.

Dr. Cutler grew up in small towns in Western Massachusetts.  Her passion for animals and the natural world began during her childhood as she was lucky to have parents who exposed her to and shared her interest in pets, farm animals and enjoying outdoor activities that continue to be a part of Sarah’s adult life such as hiking, skiing, and exploring the great outdoors.

Dr. Cutler’s undergraduate degree (BA) from Smith College was a major in Spanish. She began her pursuit of veterinary medicine 3 years after graduation from Smith College, working in Argentina as an English teacher, and after two years of working in the publishing industry in NYC.  In 1991 Dr. Cutler started her pre-vet classes at Hunter College in Manhattan and worked as a receptionist, bookkeeper, and veterinary assistant at Park East Animal Hospital.

From 1993-1997 Dr. Cutler studied and received her veterinary degree, and enjoyed the school experience immensely.  While her major was in small animal medicine and surgery, she spent ample time in the wildlife center, working at veterinary hospitals with exotics, and working in the large animal NICU.  Her summers were spent at the Animal Medical Center in NYC and after graduation, her first veterinary job was as a one year intern at this institution. She then accepted a job at Park East Animal Hospital, where she worked for 6 years.

After moving to Northern Westchester County in New York, Dr. Cutler worked at Somers Animal Hospital from 2004-2010.  She enjoyed working in this busy setting and formed bonds with her colleagues and clients that are still growing today.   After 19 years of working in hospital settings, it was time for a change of pace and to try something new.

In 2010, Dr. Cutler started her own house call practice, At Home Vet Care.  At that time she was only the second house call veterinarian in Westchester County.   Since then, she can count at least 4 more who have joined the “club” and she considers these veterinarians to be colleagues.  Her interest in canine and feline behavior began to flourish as she was spending more time with clients and their pets in the home environment.  Since she was essentially on her own, many of the questions regarding training and techniques that used to be directed at a front desk, were now hers to answer.   In the past decade, she has dedicated much of her continuing education to the study of pet behavior and the ways in which we can strengthen the human-animal bond in the home by sorting out problem issues.   She has found many mentors in this field and completed multiple demanding courses and seminars. (University of Sydney, NAVC Institute, Karen Pryor Academy to name a few)

Dr. Cutler’s approach to veterinary medicine is driven by her passion for the humane treatment of our pet animals.  She encompasses an openness to the evolution of modern and traditional medicine, and is very interested in all the elements that come together to create a strong human-animal bond and a healthy pet.

She continually attempts to look at the whole picture which includes preventative care, treatment of medical and surgical diseases, and addresses home management, lifestyle and behavioral counseling.
